kevin greenberg Deft, nimble house of the highest caliber. As a decades-long fan of house music, I'm here to tell you that this music displays deference for its forebears, but it's not a simple homage: these compositions are exciting and bubbling with life. A beautiful release! Favorite track: A3 - Midnight on Mt. Yoshino.

about

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi’s series ’100 Aspects of the Moon’ (1839-1892) is a masterpiece of Japanese Ukiyo-e wood block printing. The series is filled with moonlit images of tragic love, untouchable beauty and the serenity of everyday activities. He brings emotion and elegance to these images with the ease of a masterful storyteller, spinning tales and twisting the outcomes to suit his unique perspective. The melancholic nostalgia that these prints induce is filtered through hazy spectrums of sound in Lohrey’s work, to find itself in a landscape somewhere between the dreamworld and the waking one. An intro theme and a single interlude mark the beginning of both sides of the tape, acting as melodic bookends to an otherwise rhythmic journey. Each song was meticulously recorded live again and again using an assortment of hardware instruments until the most complete actualization was achieved. These are sonic stories of the spirits of the ocean, the earth and the sky.

Imaginary Tapes is an outlet for sonic imagery. That is, sounds that are formed from a basis of imagined landscapes or thoughts. This concept exists in both oblique and concrete manifestations, allowing the artist’s inclinations to shape the relationships between the visual and aural realms. They are sonic vignettes for unmade films, landscapes and portraits playing on their varied ties to real structures and imagined images.

The forests, mountains, swamps and beaches of the San Juan islands in the Pacific Northwest sits at the core of Robin Lohrey’s work, placing its varied landscapes in conversation with the fantastical imagery of the piano books and scores his siblings were playing at a young age, ultimately setting out on his own journey from the same pages at the age of four, branching out into improvisational and free-floating composition as he moved towards adulthood. 18 years and many moons later, he now continues that exploration in digital, analog and acoustic means, striving to be a vessel for light and love in a world shrouded by darkness.
